A private company proposed to build a mini hydro project near Gatabe area without knowing the value of that location. Gatabe area has a great ecological value, historical value, and a cultural value. This place also has a great aesthetic value as it is situated right next to the Mahaweli River. It is necessary to take these values in to account before permitting this sort of projects.
There is an endemic fresh water fish species named “Kola Gadaya” in the location. There is also valuable vegetation in the area. Moreover, this proposed project actually falls in a location where there is the widest and the narrowest area of Mahaweli River. Further, there is a stone layer in the Mahaweli river which purifies the polluted water. This purification is very much needed as people throw garbage into Mahaweli River. As a result of this natural purification system, people can directly use this water for their daily activities.
This place has a historical value and also a cultural value which comes along with Dalada Perahara and ordination.
CEJ opposed the project from the beginning and we have also opposed the project even after conducting the second EIA.
